Preventing patient falls is a critical challenge in healthcare environments, particularly for high-risk patients who require continuous monitoring. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) sought a solution that would improve patient safety while reducing the significant costs associated with in-room companions.
Working closely with MSKCC, intuVision developed a customized video analytics solution designed specifically for the demands of a fast-paced, highly mobile clinical environment. The result was the implementation of the Constant Care Program, an intelligent patient monitoring system that provides early intervention capabilities, improved patient safety, and greater peace of mind for healthcare providers.
At the heart of the Constant Care Program is intuVision VA, powered by patented video analytics algorithms designed to detect patient movement and alert staff before a fall occurs. The system was deployed across 267 patient rooms, continuously monitoring patients identified as being at elevated risk of falls.
Ceiling-mounted cameras provide comprehensive visibility of both bed and chair areas within each room. The analytics generate configurable alerts that range from detecting early patient movement to notifying staff when a patient attempts to exit a bed or chair, enabling caregivers to intervene before a fall can occur.
To support clinical workflows, the intuVision Review Application was customized specifically for the fall-prevention use case. Features such as specialized patient annotations, privacy-preserving video blurring, live video review, and alarm acknowledgment workflows provide staff with an efficient and intuitive monitoring experience while maintaining patient privacy.
With more than 20 years of experience in video analytics, intuVision VA delivers configurable analytics capabilities across multiple application modules and supports a wide range of unique use cases. The platform combines advanced analytics with rapid customization and an experienced technical team to ensure each deployment meets specific operational requirements.
The Constant Care Program has delivered significant improvements in both patient safety and operational efficiency:
By combining intelligent video analytics with customized healthcare workflows, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has implemented, through intuVision VA, a scalable, cost-effective approach to patient monitoring that enhances patient outcomes, improves staff responsiveness, and reduces the costs associated with traditional observation methods.
